Of Might And Main is the recording moniker of John Shorkey. Hailing from Toronto, he currently lives in Lindsay, smalltown southern Ontario, CANADA. Misfits and Bail and Parole are OMAM's second and third albums. A self-titled debut album came out in 2004, and in a previous incarnation known as Too Far Gone, two EP's and a single were released. Too Far Gone originated with John and his lyricist brother Jim Shorkey writing songs together and forming a band with guitarist Brian Steele, bassist Davey Dozois, and drummer Sheila McDougall. They made it out of the basement for a couple of local pub shows in the east end of Toronto but the band dissolved not long after and TFG lay dormant for years. As the songs piled up, the brothers decided to start to record some of them and got drummer Greg MacIlvene involved again (he had originally sat in on an early TFG session). Greg brought in his long time rhythm partner, bassist Mike Smith, and they recorded the bed tracks for the Too Far Gone recordings. Misfits is a collection of songs written by the brothers during this same period in the 90's. They continue to record the many songs they wrote during this period and hope to release them in the near future. Bail and Parole continues where the debut OMAM album left off. A running theme of urban desolation is interspersed with more traditional country type songs. OMAM's style is impure and varies from song to song. Uptempo, sad, noisy, country twinged, the music is not easily classifiable but always catchy. Kick things off with Back To The Start, enjoy the acoustic sound of a song like The Drinking Man, gear up for Going Nowhere or Let's Just Burn Pennsylvania Down, vent along with Natural Law, pause for reflection on songs such as Misfits and We Had A Contract, get back to the country with Am I Blue? No.1 and Drinking To Forget, then replenish yourself with That's When I Can't Decide. Listening to these albums, it all seems so simple. You are invited to listen as OMAM try to straighten out the mess that is this life. For new ideas and new tastes, check out OMAM.
